I will never do less because I’m not expected to do more.

This idea of putting in minimum effort to make my life easier has rarely crossed my mind.

Ever since I can remember, whenever I have been given a task I will be mapping it out in my head as it’s being explained, working out the best way to start. I set it all out like a puzzle. I put all the edge pieces, the easier pieces, to the front, and the rest in colour piles behind. I like to do them in order, following my plan. Sometimes that plan changes, more gets added, some gets taken away. And just like a puzzle, when you put all the edges together you have a foundation to build from.

When I have finished a task and put aaall my effort and creativity and time and passion into it, I am so proud, beaming with self satisfaction. And that feeling, that secret smile to myself. That small hug I give myself when it’s all paid off. That’s why I do it. That’s why I change jobs when I am no longer growing. That’s why I will do something the long winded way just to make sure every detail is accounted for. That’s why I get to work early and don’t mind working late.

Yesterday someone said to me, “why are you putting so much effort in? It’s not like they are paying you”. I honestly wanted to shout! I have just changed careers and am doing unpaid work to follow a life long dream. I work hard every damn day to make sure I do the best I can do for myself and for the company I am now a part of. I put in the effort, not only for myself, but for others, for their happiness. For their successes as well as my own. Otherwise what is the point? What is the point in all of it? It was Will Smith who said, “If you’re not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better”. And I truly believe this is true. Doing things for yourself is great and taking time to look after you and refill your cup is important. But when it’s full, and sometimes even when it isn’t, extending that and doing things for others will benefit you in so many positive ways. You can succeed on your own. But doing it with others and pulling them up with you is so much better.

If we get the privalidge to be able to follow our dreams and wake up every forking day and pursue something that so many people can only ever imagine of having. We have the responsibility to do it to the very best of your ability. I think a lot of people, myself included, not so long ago, don’t understand or maybe don’t feel this because they haven’t found their ‘why’. If this is you. Keep searching. You will find it I promise you. If you have the desire to achieve and fulfil your wildest dreams, you will always find a way.

Putting in at least 80% most of the time and 110% the rest is exhausting. You won’t have it together all the time and majority of the time you also won’t know what the hell you are doing. But that’s all part of it. That’s the beautiful part of the puzzle, you don’t know how it all goes together. But the pieces do all have a way of connecting together with time and patience.

Remember that the reason you are doing this is to make your life better.
